A reality from Hawler

This photo was taken in 2004 in Hawler. Please note the sign behind him.

A man his age should be telling stories to grand kids at home, not sell rosaries on some sidewalk :(

This photo taken in 2010 of the same guy in the same exact spot in Hawler

I asked if he remembered me buying rosaries from him in 2004? After a long conversation, I learned more about his personal life.  I decided to buy a few more rosaries, however, he refused to accept anything in return despite his poverty!

  1. Amazing story, this is truly an example that one does not have to live with luxury to be happy in life.
Many times, the happiest people in life are the most humble and poor in material wealth.
For though they are poor in wealth, they are rich in spirit.
    God bless.

  2. Yes Jeffery..you hit is hard dear. If you want to live happy, live simple =) I bet you this old man (which I called him by mama) is far happier than many leaders who run the region and acquire money in an illegitimate way.

  5. I'm proud yes, but not surprised. our Kurdish culture is full of similar stories. When you see such an old man still working it does not mean that no one wanted to help him, or he is going to die otherwise. But it's his personality or thinking. By the moment he stops working he feels that the is dead. So I don't think that he is living from what he earns. He is living because he is working.

  6. Beautiful pictures and your story is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I'm happy that the man is selling prayer beads rather than begging in the street, though. Judging by the reactions I've experienced as an American in Kurdistan, I'm sure he was PROUD and HONORED to give beads to an American, ESPECIALLY a Kurdish American!!

  9. Yes, it had nice face of humanity and satisfactionary.
But, in the other hand, I disagree with some of the comments. This man should have a better life, and should not be suffer in the cold & hot weathers.
We should be realistic, this man need smile, air, water, nice place to live, good food, etc. I'm not sure if he got all!

  10. Kak Shwan, I very much disagree with your comment abt him not needing help. Nothing is wrong with working and I agree that wanting to work is perhaps a hobby in many elderly retired men. But look at the work conditions that he is under. I talked to him and he did indicate that he makes a living out of selling those rosaries. And he is surprised that some ppl even bargain over the few dinars that he profits from selling those rosaries.

Plus please explain me this article that I am attaching to my comment,
